So in going with our theme of lowering out carbon footprint, how about considering making things yourself? You know, growing your own veggies, eating in more often then out, and hey! What about making your own clothing and blankets?
Did you know that most products we buy in stores are shipped from overseas? (Especially quilts!) In order to find products at the prices we want, companies have products made in countries where labor is cheap, and often children are forced to sew the clothing we wear, the quilts we use. If you've ever made a quilt you know how much hard work goes into them. If a quilt took 10 hours to make, how can it possible sell for only $40?? You guessed it.
So besides the obvious ethical dilemmas here, you also have air pollution from the planes that bring these products back and forth, the carbon monoxide from the trucks that ship them from store to the store and more waste, more money.
So what can we do to help remedy the situation? Well, we can make many of the products we need to buy at home!
The absolutely fabulously, creative, and insanely wonderful people over at youcanmakethis.com have come up with yet another fabulous addition to their site. You can Quilt This! This new site is going to be fabulous.

AMEN AMEN AMEN. I sew as part of my business. It is time consuming, and the supplies are very expensive. I can not seem to get people to understand that it really is worth the price we charge for our handmade goods.
I can't wait to check this out.

Oh I hear you :) see about the comment above, so true, people just think we overcharge, I had to put 50% off everything in my shop and still nothing ugh...we should be a little more appreciated for our hard work :)
Love the new YCQT site :)
Thanks for the link. I so would love to take a quilting class. If only my schedule would allow it!
Such a great idea. If everybody did a couple things like this the impact would be huge.
just wanted to stop by and thank you for your thoughtful comment on my last post. I agree with what you said. :)
I love your blog and also love to quilt. My curtains are the envy of my friends because I sewed them and they purchased theirs from a store. We have so much more choice when we sew.
